UL AM workshop: Fundamentals of additive manufacturing designs (28 June)

The UL AM Workshops are presented by Paul Bates, General Manager, UL Additive Manufacturing Competency Center (AMCC).


UL’s courses help facilitate the safe and successful implementation of additive manufacturing (AM) for many industry audiences, including experienced engineers, designers, production technicians and business professionals.

At Additive Manufacturing Europe, UL will present three separate one-day workshops, specially adapted for the show:

Course fees include lunch and refreshments. In order keep the courses interactive, class sizes will be limited and places allocated on a first come, first served basis.

In this discussion-oriented session participants receive comprehensive knowledge of the additive manufacturing industry, the seven different technologies, the associated benefits and limitations and how 3D printing is being utilized within select industries. The afternoon session will focus on how to create and fix design files, identify designs that are printable, how to design for manufacturability, and compare conventional design activities to additive manufacturing design activities.

Objectives

  • Examine the seven 3D printing technologies and related materials
  • Compare the benefits and limitations of 3D printing
  • Describe the steps required to output, investigate and repair AM design files
  • Explain how to implement design for manufacturability and assembly strategies using AM
  • Discuss how to identify key design factors and gather customer requirements when creating a part for AM

Students will review and discuss related case studies to apply these principles.

This course is intended for professional designers, practicing engineers, and skilled technicians who want to understand how to design parts using AM.
